Candy Cane Christmas Cookies

This is another recipe from my friend Stephanie...absolutey love this cute idea!
Cream:
1/2 cup butter
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup powdered sugar
Add:1 egg
1 1/2 tsp almond extract
1 tsp vanilla
Mix in:
2 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt

Separate dough in half.

Into one half mix in 1/2 tsp red food color. Depending on how large you want your cookies, depends on how much dough you use for each candy cane. Take equal amounts of white and red dough. Roll them out individually like snakes and then roll them together to look like candy canes. Simple and kids LOVE doing this!Bake them for 9 minutes at 375 degrees. When they come out of the oven immediately sprinkle the following topping on top (you may need to push them into the cookie slightly to ensure they stay)
Topping:
1/2 cup crushed candy canes
1/2 cup granulated sugar
